Asilah
The artists' town of the north — Portuguese ramparts, a whitewashed medina repainted with murals every summer, and long Atlantic beaches.
Asilah is the tidiest surprise on the northern coast: a small fishing town wrapped in 15th-century Portuguese ramparts, its medina washed white and sea-blue and kept almost impossibly clean. Since the late 1970s the town has hosted a cultural moussem each summer, and its signature gesture endures — artists repaint the medina's walls with murals every year, so the town you walk through is never quite the same town twice.
It is a place for unhurried pleasures: espresso in a paved square, grilled fish near the harbour, the walk along the ramparts to watch the Atlantic turn gold. Spanish day-trippers cross over in summer and give the seafront a cheerful holiday hum, but stay a night and you get the quiet version — early light on white walls, fishermen mending nets, the medina to yourself before breakfast.
The murals
Fresh paintings appear on the medina walls each summer during the arts moussem — a free open-air gallery that renews itself.
Ramparts & bastions
The Portuguese sea walls and the Krikia bastion give the classic view — waves breaking directly below the parapet.
Fish by the harbour
Sardines, sole and whatever the boats brought in, grilled simply — the north-coast lunch done right.
Paradise Beach
A wide, wilder strand a few kilometres south of town — walk, ride or take a calèche in summer.
Beach weather, long evenings, and the summer moussem with its fresh murals — the town at full colour.
Mild and quiet, with the light photographers cross continents for.
Atlantic weather — bright days between showers, empty lanes, lower prices. Bring a jacket.
How Asilah fits your journey
Asilah slots perfectly into a northern loop: under an hour from Tangier's port and airport, and a gentle coastal counterpoint before the mountains at Chefchaouen and the medina depths of Fes.

He adds Asilah to northern journeys as the slow day — the town does the rest.
