Marrakech works on you slowly. The medina looks like chaos from the outside — scooters, hand carts, a thousand doorways — and then a riad door closes behind you and you're standing in a courtyard of orange trees and birdsong, and the chaos was never really chaos at all. It's the oldest trick in Morocco, and it still works every time.
I bring first-time guests here to get their bearings before we head for the mountains or the sand, and I bring them back at the end to decompress and eat well before the flight home. Give the city at least two full days — one for the souks and the square, one for the gardens and a slower pace.

Almost every southern journey begins here. West to Essaouira is a half-day trip; south over the Tizi n'Tichka pass opens the whole Ouarzazate–Dades–Merzouga road; the High Atlas villages around Imlil are less than two hours away.
