Agdz

The quiet town where the Draa Valley begins — old kasbahs, an endless palmeraie, and one of the most beautiful road journeys in Morocco on its doorstep.

Agdz sits at the moment the Draa Valley opens: the road from Ouarzazate climbs over the bare Tizi n'Tinififft pass, and then the world changes — below you is a river of palms running south between pink and ochre cliffs, with the pyramid ridge of Jbel Kissane standing over the town like a monument. From here to Zagora is roughly ninety-five kilometres of oasis, ksour and kasbahs, and many travellers who have driven all of Morocco name this stretch the loveliest road in the country.

The town itself asks nothing of you but a slow afternoon. There is a plane-shaded square, date and henna sellers, and on the edge of the palmeraie the old kasbahs — some ruined, some restored, one or two you can wander with a local caretaker. I like guests to sleep here rather than race through: the valley at first light, before the tour traffic moves, belongs to the birds and the farmers.

Stop at the top of the Tizi n'Tinififft pass before you descend — the first full view of the Draa is worth five quiet minutes. — M.
QUE FAIRELes choix de Mustapha

Walk the palmeraie

Paths thread the palm gardens between mud walls — dates overhead, wheat and henna below, mountains beyond.

Kasbah Tamnougalt

A short drive south: one of the great fortified villages of the Draa, its caid's kasbah open to visitors.

Jbel Kissane at sunset

The town's table-mountain backdrop turns copper in the last hour of light — photograph it from the palm edge.

The road south

The Agdz–Zagora stretch of the N9 is the scenic heart of the Draa — allow twice the time the map suggests.

QUAND PARTIR
OCT – APRILPRIME

Mild valley days and clear light on the palms and cliffs — perfect driving and walking weather.

Date harvest comes in autumn
MAY & SEPTSHOULDER

Hot in the afternoons, but mornings in the palmeraie stay lovely.

JUN – AUGGO HIGH

The Draa cooks in high summer. Pass through early, or save the valley for the cool season.

How Agdz fits your journey

Agdz is the hinge between Ouarzazate and the deep south — the natural first stop of the Draa Valley run toward Zagora, M'hamid and the dunes, and an easy pairing with Skoura's oasis on the other side of Ouarzazate.

BON À SAVOIR
Getting there: An easy hour from Ouarzazate on the N9 over the Tizi n'Tinififft pass — a spectacular drive in itself.
Take it slowly: The point of Agdz is the pace. Build in a palmeraie walk or a kasbah visit rather than treating it as a fuel stop.
Local produce: The Draa is date country — buy them here, along with henna, rather than in the city souks.
