Ask anyone in Chefchaouen what to do on your second day and the answer is Akchour. A short mountain drive from the blue city, where the Oued Farda and Oued Kelaa come down out of Talassemtane National Park, two walks begin at a small dam: one climbs the river to a chain of waterfalls and cold green pools, the other crosses to God's Bridge — a natural rock arch flung high across the gorge, one of the strangest and most beautiful things in northern Morocco.

This is the Rif as few first-time visitors imagine it: fir and cedar forest, riverside cafés cooking tagines beside the path, Barbary macaques in the high trees if you are lucky. The full walk to the grand cascade is a half-day there and back; God's Bridge is shorter and steeper. Do either — or both, with a swim and a riverside lunch between — and you will sleep well in the blue city that night.

Start before nine. You will have the river path in shade, the pools to yourself, and lunch waiting when the crowds arrive. — M.
QUE FAIRELes choix de Mustapha

Wander the blue city

A slow photo walk through the indigo alleys of Chefchaouen at first light.

The grand cascade

The full river walk climbs past smaller falls and pools to the big one — allow a half-day there and back.

God's Bridge

A natural stone arch spanning the Oued Farda high above the water — a shorter, steeper walk from the dam.

Riverside tagines

Simple café stands line the lower path, cooking over coals beside the water — lunch does not get fresher-aired.

Swim the pools

Deep green basins below the falls — mountain-cold in any month, gloriously so in early summer.

Talassemtane forest

The park protects rare Moroccan fir and cedar — serious walkers can continue deeper on marked trails.

QUAND PARTIR
MAR – JUNPRIME

The falls at full flow, the Rif green from winter rain, and walking temperatures at their best.

May is the sweet spot
JUL – AUGGOOD

Hot on the open stretches and busy at weekends — but the pools earn their keep. Start early.

NOV – FEBSHOULDER

Wet season in the Rif — the river runs high and paths turn muddy. Beautiful, but check conditions.

How Akchour fits your journey

Akchour is the natural second day of any Chefchaouen stay — a morning-to-afternoon loop out of the blue city, back in time for the medina at dusk. It turns Chefchaouen from an overnight photo stop into a proper two-night stay.

BON À SAVOIR
Getting there: About 45 minutes by road from Chefchaouen; shared taxis run from town, or come with a driver and keep your timings.
The walks: The grand cascade is a half-day round trip on a rough river path; God's Bridge is shorter but steeper. Proper shoes, not sandals.
Water & cash: Bring cash for the riverside cafés and enough water for the climb — and pack out what you pack in.
Swimming: The pools are mountain-cold all year. In spring the current below the falls deserves respect.
