Casablanca
Morocco's modern engine — art-deco boulevards, the Atlantic, and one of the largest mosques on Earth.
Most journeys through Morocco begin at Casablanca's airport, and most guidebooks tell you to leave immediately. I don't entirely agree. It's the country's real economic capital, not a tourist set-piece, and the contrast is worth an afternoon — 1920s art-deco facades downtown, the enormous Hassan II Mosque standing half over the ocean, and a genuinely good seafood scene along the corniche.
It isn't a place to linger for days, and I never plan more than a night here unless a flight schedule demands it. But arriving into real, working Morocco rather than a curated old medina first sets useful context for everywhere else you'll go.
Hassan II Mosque
Hand-carved cedar, marble from Agadir, and a retractable roof — a modern landmark done properly.
Habous Quarter
A 1920s-built 'new medina' — arcaded streets, a calmer souk, and good spots for lunch.
The corniche at sunset
A seafront walk past surf clubs and seafood grills as the Atlantic light turns gold.
Mild Atlantic weather, good for the corniche and walking the old town.
The same easy coastal climate as spring.
Warm but tempered by the ocean — rarely uncomfortable.
Mild by Moroccan winter standards, occasional rain off the Atlantic.
Casablanca as your arrival point
Most itineraries touch Casablanca only briefly on arrival or departure, using it as the gateway to Marrakech, Rabat or the imperial cities road north.
