Cascades d'Ouzoud

The Ouzoud waterfalls — around 110 metres of cascading water through terraced olive groves, and the most popular day trip from Marrakech after the desert itself.

Ouzoud means "olives" in the local Amazigh dialect, and the name is exact: the falls drop roughly 110 metres in tiers through terraced olive groves before crashing into the Oued el-Abid gorge below, and on a clear afternoon the spray regularly throws a rainbow across the lower pools. They are the tallest and most celebrated waterfalls in North Africa, and — after the desert — the single most popular day trip out of Marrakech, for good reason: paths wind down through the groves to viewpoints and swimming pools, small boats ferry visitors close to the base of the falls, and troops of wild Barbary macaques move through the trees along the upper trail.

The macaques here are genuinely wild and increasingly used to visitors, which means the responsible approach matters more, not less: watch from a sensible distance, never feed them, and keep food secured, since habituated macaques will take it directly from bags. Most visitors come for a single afternoon, and that is enough to see the falls properly — but staying a night lets you catch the trails at dawn, before the day-trip buses from Marrakech arrive.

Walk down to the base of the falls rather than only viewing from the top — the boat ride through the spray is worth the wet clothes. — M.
QUE FAIRELes choix de Mustapha

The main falls viewpoint

The classic view from the clifftop takes in the full 110-metre drop through the olive terraces — best in the softer light of morning or late afternoon.

Walk down to the base

A path descends through the groves to the pools at the foot of the falls, where small boats ferry visitors close to the spray.

Barbary macaques on the trails

Wild macaque troops move through the trees along the upper paths — watch from a distance and never feed or approach them.

Swim in the pools

Below the falls, natural pools invite a swim in warmer months — bring a towel and expect cold, fresh mountain water.

QUAND PARTIR
MAR – JUNPRIME

Strong water flow after winter rain and snowmelt, green groves, and comfortable walking temperatures.

SEP – NOVPRIME

Reliable flow, clear autumn light, and thinner crowds than the summer peak.

JUL – AUGGOOD

Busiest with domestic and day-trip visitors; water levels can be lower after a dry summer, though the falls still run.

How Ouzoud fits your journey

Ouzoud is the classic single-day escape from Marrakech, and pairs naturally with a longer detour into the Central Atlas toward Bin El Ouidane and Aït Bouguemez for guests with more time than a standard day trip allows.

BON À SAVOIR
Getting there: About 3 hours from Marrakech by road — comfortably done as a long day trip, or with an overnight for a quieter early morning at the falls.
The macaques: Never feed or approach them, and keep food zipped away — habituated troops here will take food directly from bags left open.
Footwear: The path down to the base is steep, uneven and often wet with spray — proper shoes, not sandals.
Crowds: As Marrakech's most popular day trip, midday can be busy in high season — early morning or late afternoon is quieter.
