Imlil sits less than two hours from Marrakech and feels like a different country — walnut-shaded Amazigh villages, terraced fields, and Jebel Toubkal rising to 4,167 metres at the head of the valley, snow-capped for much of the year. It's the easiest genuine mountain escape from the city, and I send guests here whether they're climbing the summit or simply want a day of clean air and quiet trails.

You don't need mountaineering experience for a day walk into the foothill villages, sharing bread and tea with a local family along the way; the summit itself is a serious but non-technical trek, best done with a proper mountain guide and two days either side of it.

Take the village trail rather than the direct summit path if you only have a day — the walnut groves and the mule trains between hamlets are the real charm of Imlil. — M.
QUE FAIRELes choix de Mustapha

Trek the High Atlas

Walk between villages and passes beneath Mount Toubkal with a mountain guide.

Mule trek to a Berber village

A gentle day into the foothills to share bread and tea with a mountain family.

Village-to-village walking

Gentle trails between Amazigh hamlets, terraced fields and walnut groves, no summit required.

Jebel Toubkal ascent

North Africa's highest peak — a serious two-day trek with a mountain guide, not a casual walk.

Tea with a mountain family

A common and genuinely warm custom here — accept if you're invited in.

QUAND PARTIR
APR – JUNPRIME

Snowmelt fills the valley streams and wildflowers cover the lower slopes.

SEP – OCTPRIME

Stable autumn weather, ideal for both village walks and the Toubkal ascent.

JUL – AUGGOOD

Warm at valley level but the higher trails stay pleasantly cool.

DEC – MARGO HIGH

Serious winter conditions on Toubkal itself — a village visit still works, the summit needs proper mountaineering gear.

BON À SAVOIR
Getting there: A private transfer from Marrakech takes under two hours on a good road.
Mountain guides: Required for the Toubkal summit — I arrange this through a licensed local mountain guide.
Pack: Proper layers even in summer — it's noticeably colder here than in Marrakech, especially at night.
