Merzouga
The great dunes of the Moroccan Sahara — a sea of wind-carved sand where Mustapha has camped, guided and watched the stars for twenty years.

Where the black hamada gravel ends, the sand begins — suddenly, like a shoreline. Erg Chebbi is a sea of dunes twenty-two kilometres long, and Merzouga is the harbour village at its edge. This is the Morocco people close their eyes and imagine: camel shadows at dusk, a fire in the cold night, and more stars than sky.
I have crossed these dunes in every season. I know the quiet camps away from the crowds, the families in Khamlia who play gnawa music at home, and the exact dune to climb so the sunrise belongs to you alone. Give Merzouga two nights — one is a postcard; two is a memory.
Camel trek at dusk
An hour into the erg by caravan as the light turns copper — the classic, and still the best.
A night in a desert camp
Dinner by the fire, drums after tea, and a bed under canvas — simple or luxurious, your choice.
Dawn on the high dune
A twenty-minute climb in the dark, mint tea at the top, and the Sahara turning pink below you.
4x4 around the erg
Nomad tents, the seasonal lake at Dayet Srji when the flamingos come, and the old lead mines.
Gnawa music in Khamlia
Tea with the musician families of the "village of the Blues" — rhythm you feel in your chest.
Stars like nowhere else
No light for a hundred kilometres. On a moonless night the Milky Way casts a shadow.
Warm days, cold clear nights, low golden light. The season the desert was made for.
Hot afternoons — we ride at dawn and dusk and rest at noon, like the locals do.
45°C on the sand. Better months for the Atlas and the coast — the erg will wait.
How Merzouga fits your journey
The dunes sit at the far end of the great southern loop. The classic way: cross the Atlas from Marrakech, sleep in the Dades, reach the sand on day three — then out through the Ziz palms to Fes. No back-tracking, and the landscape changes every hour.

Born an hour from these dunes. He has guided Erg Chebbi in every month of the year.
