Moulay Idriss Zerhoune

A hilltop pilgrimage town built around the tomb of Moulay Idriss I, founder of Morocco's first Islamic dynasty — quiet, devout, and paired naturally with Volubilis just down the hill.

Moulay Idriss Zerhoune is built across two hills around the tomb of Moulay Idriss I, the 8th-century founder of Morocco's first Islamic dynasty and, by tradition, a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad. The town that grew around his shrine is considered the most important pilgrimage site in Morocco — some Moroccans who cannot make the hajj to Mecca undertake pilgrimage here instead — and it remains, first and foremost, a living place of devotion rather than a sight built for visitors.

For a long period, non-Muslims were not permitted to stay overnight in the town, a restriction that eased only in the mid-2000s; it is worth knowing that history rather than assuming the town has always welcomed outside guests the way it does today. What you find now is a genuinely beautiful hill town of green-tiled roofs and whitewashed lanes, a famous viewpoint looking down over both hills, and — a few minutes below — the Roman ruins of Volubilis, making the pairing one of the most naturally complete short trips near Meknes and Fes.

Dress modestly and keep your voice down near the shrine itself — the town is welcoming to respectful visitors, but this is a living holy site, not a museum. — M.

The shrine of Moulay Idriss I

The mausoleum at the heart of the town — approached respectfully and from a distance by non-Muslim visitors, as is customary.

The twin-hill viewpoint

A well-known terrace gives a full view across both hills of the town and its green-roofed rooftops.

The only round minaret in Morocco

A cylindrical minaret, unusual in Moroccan architecture, decorated with green tilework — a genuine local landmark.

Walk down to Volubilis

The Roman ruins sit a short drive or a walkable distance below the town — the two are almost always visited together.

MAR – JUNPRIME

Mild spring weather, good for the walk up through the town and the views from the terrace.

Comfortable temperatures and clear light, matching the best months for neighbouring Volubilis.

JUL – AUGGOOD

Warm, with little shade on the exposed hillside paths — visit the viewpoint earlier or later in the day.

BON À SAVOIR
Getting there: About 40 minutes from Meknes by road, immediately adjacent to Volubilis — almost always visited together.
Dress & conduct: This is a living pilgrimage town — modest dress and quiet, respectful behaviour near the shrine are expected of all visitors.
Visiting the shrine: Non-Muslims may enter the town and view the shrine exterior/courtyard from a respectful distance but do not enter the mausoleum itself — the same courtesy Moroccans extend to non-Muslims at religious sites generally.
History: Overnight stays by non-Muslim visitors were restricted until roughly the mid-2000s — worth knowing as context for the town's more recent opening to tourism.
