El Jadida

El Jadida grew up around Mazagan, a fortified Portuguese trading post established in the early 16th century and held by Portugal until 1769 — long enough to leave genuinely distinctive bastions, ramparts and a Manueline-Gothic church behind. The whole walled quarter, the Cité Portugaise, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its single most memorable feature sits underground: a vaulted cistern, built to store water and later used to store grain, where a shallow film of water on the floor turns the vaulted ceiling into a perfect, silent reflection.
The cistern is famous partly because of cinema — its eerie symmetry has drawn filmmakers for decades — but it earns the reputation on its own terms even without that history. Above ground, the ramparts give long Atlantic views and a genuinely walkable old town, small enough to see properly in half a day, unhurried enough to justify a night if your route allows it.
