The Dades Valley is where the mountains and the desert argue over the landscape, and neither quite wins — rose-coloured rock formations, switchback roads, and a kasbah at what feels like every bend in the river. In late spring the Valley of Roses nearby genuinely does smell of roses, harvested for the local cosmetics industry.

I always build in a full afternoon on the gorge road itself, driving slowly rather than rushing through — the famous 'monkey fingers' rock formations and the layered cliffs reward unhurried looking, and the light changes them completely between morning and evening.

The gorge road is at its best about two hours before sunset, when the rock face turns properly rose-red. — M.
WHAT TO DOMustapha’s picks

Trek the High Atlas

Walk between villages and passes beneath Mount Toubkal with a mountain guide.

The gorge road

Switchbacks through rose-coloured rock, with kasbahs and villages clinging to the cliffs above the river.

Valley of Roses

In May, the Kelaat M'Gouna rose harvest fills the valley with scent — ask about timing your visit around it.

Monkey fingers rock formations

Strange, eroded rock towers a short walk off the main gorge road.

WHEN TO GO
MAR – MAYPRIME

The rose harvest in May and comfortable temperatures throughout.

SEP – NOVPRIME

Clear autumn light on the gorge walls, fewer visitors than spring.

JUN – AUGGOOD

Hot at valley floor level, cooler higher in the gorge.

DEC – FEBSHOULDER

Cold at night this high — pack proper layers if travelling in winter.

On your route

The Dades on the road between Ouarzazate and Merzouga

The Dades sits naturally on the classic southern loop, between Ouarzazate behind and Todra Gorge or Merzouga ahead.

THE ROAD OF THE KASBAHS
DAYS 1–2
Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate
Over the pass and into the south
DAY 3
Dades Valley — you are here
Kasbahs and the rose road
DAYS 4–5
Todra Gorge → Merzouga
Canyon walls, then the dunes
GOOD TO KNOW
Getting there: Best reached by private road from Ouarzazate — a spectacular drive in its own right.
Pace: Drive the gorge road slowly; it rewards unhurried looking more than almost anywhere else in the south.
Timing: Visit in May if the rose harvest interests you — ask me to time the route around it.
