A sandbar shelters Oualidia's lagoon from the open Atlantic, and that single piece of geography explains everything about the place: calm, shallow, mineral-rich water that has made it one of Morocco's best-known spots for oyster farming, and a safe swimming and kayaking lagoon in a country where the open coast is often rough. Wooden oyster shacks line stretches of the shore, and eating them within sight of where they grew is one of the small, genuine pleasures of this coast.
The lagoon also draws birdlife — flamingos are a regular winter sight among other coastal species — and the wider bay has a slower, more romantic reputation than the busier resort towns, partly earned by a former royal summer residence overlooking the water.
