Behind the beaches of the Souss coast, the road to Imouzzer climbs into the hills of the Ida-Outanane, and half an hour up it drops you at the lip of a canyon full of palms. Paradise Valley is the stretch of the Tamraght river where the gorge narrows and the water gathers in a chain of smooth rock pools — turquoise when the light hits them, cold enough to make you shout, and reached by an easy walk down among boulders, oleander and argan trees.
It has been a favourite escape since the hippie era put Morocco's Atlantic coast on the map, and these days it belongs to everyone: surf-camp crowds stretching sore shoulders, Moroccan families with picnics, walkers heading further up the valley. Come early on a weekday and you will still find a pool to yourself, with nothing but frogs and falling water for company.
