Ait Ben Haddou is the ksar every film about ancient Morocco borrows — Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia and Game of Thrones have all used it — but it's a real, still-partly-inhabited village of packed earth and straw, not a film set. The whole structure glows amber at sunrise and sunset, which is exactly when I try to time a visit.

Most visitors pass through at midday between Marrakech and the desert; I prefer staying the single night nearby so guests see it without the coach groups, in the early morning quiet, when the light is doing its best work.

Cross the river on the stepping stones rather than the modern bridge if the water's low — the view back at the ksar is better from there. — M.
QUE FAIRELes choix de Mustapha

Sunrise at the ksar

The earthen towers catch the first light before the coach tours arrive — the best hour of the day here.

The still-inhabited quarter

A handful of families still live within the walls — a working village, not only a monument.

Film-location spotting

Scenes from Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia and Game of Thrones were all shot within these walls.
