Dakhla sits on a narrow desert peninsula in Morocco's deep south, where the Sahara runs straight into the Atlantic with almost nothing in between. It's remote in a way nowhere else on this list quite is — flat desert, a turquoise lagoon famous among kitesurfers worldwide, and a coastline that feels genuinely at the edge of the map.

This isn't a stop I add casually; it's a deliberate detour for guests who want genuine remoteness and world-class kite conditions, best reached by a direct flight rather than added on to a standard northern loop. For the right traveller, though, it's unlike anywhere else in the country.

The lagoon's flat water and reliable wind make it one of the best places in the world to learn kitesurfing from scratch — ask about lessons before you arrive rather than on the day. — M.
QUE FAIRELes choix de Mustapha

Catch the Atlantic swell

Morning point breaks and argan hills on the laid-back coast at Taghazout.

Kitesurfing the lagoon

Flat, warm, shallow water and near-constant wind — genuinely one of the best learning conditions anywhere.

The desert-meets-ocean coastline

Dunes running straight down to Atlantic waves, with almost no development for long stretches.

White Dune & the lagoon views

A striking bright dune above the lagoon, best seen at sunset for the colour contrast.

QUAND PARTIR
MAR – JUNPRIME

Strong, reliable trade winds for kitesurfing and comfortable desert-coast temperatures.

SEP – NOVPRIME

The same steady wind conditions as spring, with fewer visitors.

JUL – AUGGOOD

Warm and windy — good conditions but a longer travel day either way.

DEC – FEBGOOD

Cooler and less crowded, with wind conditions still generally reliable.

Sur votre itinéraire

Dakhla as a deliberate detour

Given the distance, Dakhla is usually treated as its own trip or a dedicated add-on reached by direct flight, rather than folded into a standard northern or southern loop.

A REMOTE COASTAL ADD-ON
DAY 1
Fly direct to Dakhla — vous êtes ici
Arrival on the peninsula
DAYS 2–3
Lagoon & coastline
Kitesurfing, the White Dune, and open coastal drives
BON À SAVOIR
Getting there: A direct domestic flight is by far the easiest option — the overland drive is several long days.
Kitesurfing: Book lessons and equipment in advance during peak wind season.
Remoteness: Services are more limited than further north — this suits travellers who want genuine distance from the crowds.
