Erg Chigaga

The remote erg beyond the end of the road — bigger, emptier and harder-won than Erg Chebbi, and all the better for it.

There is no tarmac to Erg Chigaga, and that single fact shapes everything about it. The last paved road in the Draa Valley dies at M'hamid, and from there it is two to three hours of 4x4 piste — hamada gravel, tamarisk, the odd nomad tent — before the first real dunes lift out of the haze. The erg itself runs some forty kilometres end to end, with crests approaching three hundred metres, and because it costs effort to reach, it stays quiet in a way the more famous dunes no longer can.

This is the desert I send guests to when they tell me they want the Sahara with nothing added — no generators humming behind the dune, no queue of camels at sunset. The camps here run on fire and lamplight, the horizon is empty in every direction, and on a moonless night the sky does things you will describe badly to your friends for years. Give it two nights: one to arrive and be amazed, one to slow down to the desert's speed.

Ask for a camp on the western side of the erg — the dunes face open hamada and the last light lasts longest there. — M.
QUE FAIRELes choix de Mustapha

Sleep under the stars

A private camp in Erg Chebbi — carpets, a fire, and the whole Milky Way overhead.

Ride the dunes at dusk

A camel caravan over golden sand as the sun drops behind the erg.

Luxury desert camp

En-suite tents, lantern-lit dinners and a private dune for sunrise.

Cross the sand by 4x4

Desert pistes and hidden oases on the tracks between kasbah and dune.

The 4x4 crossing

The drive in is half the experience — dry riverbeds, nomad country and the moment the first dune wall appears.

A camp with no neighbours

Camps here are few and far apart. Fire, lamplight, and silence you can actually hear.

Climb the great dune at dawn

The high crests of Chigaga look over the whole erg — climb in the dark, watch the desert switch on.

Cross Lake Iriqui

Leave westward over the cracked bed of a vanished lake — a mirage-flat pan on the way to Foum Zguid.

Real desert stars

No settlement for tens of kilometres. The Milky Way here is not a metaphor — it is a structure.

QUAND PARTIR
OCT – APRILPRIME

Warm days, cold sharp nights, and the low golden light the deep desert was made for.

November is wonderfully quiet
MAY & SEPTSHOULDER

Hot afternoons — travel at the edges of the day and rest at noon, as the desert intends.

JUN – AUGGO HIGH

Well past 40°C, and the piste in is long. Save Chigaga for the cool season; go to the Atlas instead.

Sur votre itinéraire

How Erg Chigaga fits your journey

Chigaga anchors the far end of the Draa Valley route: down the palm corridor from Ouarzazate through Agdz and Zagora, out past M'hamid into the sand — then, rather than backtracking, west across the dry bed of Lake Iriqui to Foum Zguid and back toward Marrakech or Taroudant. A loop with no repeated road.

THE DRAA LOOP, 4–5 DAYS
DAY 1
Marrakech → Agdz
Over the Tizi n'Tichka, into the palms
DAY 2
Zagora → M'hamid
Down the Draa to the end of the road
DAYS 2–4
Erg Chigaga — vous êtes ici
By 4x4 into the dunes — camp two nights
DAY 4
Lake Iriqui → Foum Zguid
West across the dry lake
DAY 5
Foum Zguid → Marrakech
Or south-west to Taroudant and the coast
BON À SAVOIR
Getting there: 4x4 only — there is no paved road to the erg. The piste from M'hamid takes 2–3 hours depending on route and season.
Cash & supplies: Zagora has the last reliable cash machines and pharmacies. The camps are off-grid — bring what you need in with you.
Pack: Proper warm layers from October to March — desert nights out here drop close to freezing — plus a scarf for wind-blown sand and a headlamp.
Power & signal: Expect little or no phone signal at the erg and limited charging at camp. Treat it as a feature.
