M'hamid El Ghizlane
The last village of the Draa — an old caravan town of sand-blown lanes and nomad culture, and the gateway to Erg Chigaga.
Every road has to end somewhere, and Morocco's southernmost tarmac ends at M'hamid El Ghizlane. For centuries this scatter of ksour and palm gardens was a station on the caravan routes south — the name is usually translated as "plain of the gazelles" — and the town still carries itself like a frontier: sand drifts across the road, camels wait in the shade, and everything beyond the last house is Sahara.
Most travellers pass straight through on their way to the dunes, and that is a small mistake. Walk the old quarter, drink tea slowly, and let the pace of the deep south reach you before the desert does. M'hamid is also the home of a living nomad culture — many families here settled within the last generation or two — and if you are curious and respectful, conversation comes easily.

M'hamid is the natural overnight or staging stop at the bottom of the Draa Valley — the pause between the long palm-valley drive and the 4x4 push into Erg Chigaga. It pairs naturally with Zagora a little up the valley and Agdz at the top.
The lower Draa is his home ground — Zagora, the next town up the valley, is where he was born.
