Ifrane & Azrou

A cool, pine-scented detour through the Middle Atlas — Ifrane's alpine architecture and Azrou's cedar forest macaques, on the road many desert tours already drive.

Ifrane earns its "Switzerland of Morocco" nickname honestly. Built by the French in the 1930s as a hill-station retreat from the summer heat, it still looks the part: sloped stone-and-tile roofs designed to shed snow, manicured gardens, a climate cool enough that the town has genuine winter snowfall and a small local ski area at nearby Michlifen — a real oddity in a country most people picture as entirely desert and souk.

A short drive away, Azrou sits at the edge of one of Morocco's great cedar forests, where ancient trees shelter a population of Barbary macaques accustomed enough to visitors to be seen at close range from the roadside — genuinely wild animals, not a zoo, so a respectful distance and no feeding is the rule. Both towns sit almost exactly on the road most Fes-to-Merzouga desert routes already drive, which makes this one of the easiest worthwhile detours in the country: an hour's stop that changes the entire character of the journey, however briefly.

If you're driving Fes to Merzouga in winter, budget an extra hour here — the cedar forest road can carry snow when the desert three hours south is warm and dry. — M.

Trek the High Atlas

Walk between villages and passes beneath Mount Toubkal with a mountain guide.

Barbary macaques at Azrou

Wild macaques live in the cedar forest and are often visible close to the roadside — watch respectfully, keep your distance, and never feed them.

The cedar forest

Ancient Atlas cedars, some centuries old, shade a network of forest roads and short walking trails around Azrou.

Ifrane's alpine architecture

Sloped stone roofs and chalet-style buildings unlike anywhere else in Morocco — the deliberate legacy of its 1930s founding.

Genuine winter snow

From December to February the region can see real snowfall, with a small local ski area at nearby Michlifen — rare anywhere in Morocco.

QUAND PARTIR
MAY – OCTPRIME

Cool, pine-scented air that makes a genuinely refreshing break from the lowland heat — ideal as a mid-journey pause.

DEC – FEBGOOD

Real winter conditions and occasional snow — worth it if you want to see a side of Morocco few expect, though roads can be affected.

MAR – APRSHOULDER

Transitional weather — can be mild or still wintry depending on the year. Check conditions before relying on the road.

How Ifrane & Azrou fit your journey

This pairing sits directly on the standard Fes–Merzouga desert route, roughly an hour south of Fes — an easy, worthwhile stop on the way toward Er-Rachidia and the Ziz Valley rather than a detour requiring its own trip.

DAYS 1–2

DAYS 2–3

BON À SAVOIR
Getting there: About an hour south of Fes on the main road to Er-Rachidia and Merzouga — no separate detour required for most desert-bound guests.
The macaques: Keep a respectful distance and never feed them — they are genuinely wild, and human food harms their health and behaviour.
Winter driving: In December–February check road conditions in advance — snow and ice do occur at this altitude, unusual as that is for Morocco.
Pack for cool weather: Even outside winter, evenings here are noticeably cooler than Fes or the desert — bring a layer.
