Tafraout sits in a granite bowl in the Anti-Atlas, its houses the same rose-pink as the huge, weathered boulders scattered across the surrounding hills — a landscape that turns genuinely luminous in early morning and late afternoon light. It sees far fewer visitors than the Atlas towns further north, and that quiet is a large part of its appeal: traditional Amazigh village life continues around it largely as it always has, in almond and argan terraces threaded between the rock.

A short drive out of town, a stretch of boulders was painted blue, pink and purple in 1984 by the Belgian artist Jean Vérame, using thousands of litres of paint donated for the project — a strange, striking piece of land art now known simply as the Painted Rocks, faded by decades of sun but still a genuine curiosity. Come in February, if you can, for the region's almond blossom — pale pink and white across the valleys — which draws a modest local festival and turns the whole approach to town into something worth slowing down for.

Drive out to the Painted Rocks in the late afternoon — the low sun on both the natural pink granite and the painted colours is the best light of the day. — M.

The Painted Rocks

Granite boulders painted blue and pink by Belgian artist Jean Vérame in 1984 — a striking, faded piece of land art a short drive from town.

Almond blossom in February

The valleys around Tafraout bloom pale pink and white each February, marked by a modest local festival.

Pink granite boulder country

Vast weathered granite formations surround the town, dramatic at sunrise and sunset and easily explored on foot or by car.

Traditional Amazigh villages

Stone hillside villages and terraced almond and argan groves continue much as they have for generations, with far fewer visitors than further north.

Ameln Valley walks

The nearby Ameln Valley offers gentle walking between villages set against the granite backdrop — an easy, rewarding half-day.

QUAND PARTIR
FEBPRIME

Almond blossom across the valleys and a local festival — the single best reason to time a visit precisely.

The blossom rarely lasts more than a couple of weeks
OCT – APRILPRIME

Mild days and cold clear nights, ideal for walking among the granite boulders and villages.

MAY – SEPGO HIGH

The Anti-Atlas heats up significantly. Better months exist for this particular landscape — come in the cooler season instead.

Sur votre itinéraire

How Tafraout fits your journey

Tafraout is a deliberate detour into the quiet Anti-Atlas rather than a stop on a standard loop — most naturally reached from Agadir, and rewarding guests who want genuinely off-the-beaten-path Morocco rather than the busier northern circuit.

BON À SAVOIR
Getting there: About 2½ hours from Agadir by road, over the Anti-Atlas — a scenic but winding drive.
Almond blossom timing: Blossom dates shift slightly year to year with the weather — aim for February but confirm closer to the date if timing it precisely matters to you.
Quiet infrastructure: Tafraout sees far fewer visitors than the main Atlas towns — expect a simpler, more low-key range of guesthouses and services.
The Painted Rocks: A short drive from town on unpaved tracks in places — a hire car or driver with local knowledge makes this easier.
